It goes without saying that students are the backbone of any educational institute. Not just their academic contribution but also in terms of their ideas and contribution to the management of the institute. This becomes doubly important when you are at a B-School. The budding managers are expected to manage the affairs of the institute all on their own. Right from managing the behaviour of the students on campus to the organizations of functions, it’s the students’ committee that takes the responsibility. We are talking about the apex student body at IIMK, the Students' Council, popularly called StudCon.
StudCon is a 12 member group with 6 students each from PGP I and II. Members are elected in a democratic process that spans for more than 3 weeks. Volunteers are called for from PGP II, who will be given tasks to accomplish. Depending on the enthusiasm, ability and the skill to manage these volunteers are ranked. Aided by these ranks and their personal impressions of the candidates, the batch selects the StudCon members.
StudCon works on a wide range of activities. Their responsibilities include almost everything related to student life on campus ranging from selecting the class co-ordinators for the courses to being the face and voice of the students, working towards improving the branding and image of the institute etc.. In a way, students; council is the twine that binds and connects the student community and the management.
There are various committees and interest groups that work in IIM K. The members of these committees are representatives elected through an election process facilitated and managed by the Students’ Council. StudCon works towards the congruence and synchronization of work between all these groups. It works in harmony with the various committees/Interest groups for the success of various flag ship events. To name a couple, Horizons the flagship seminar of the institute, Arthanomics with Financial interest group FY, AIMS with the Information Technology interest group ABAKUS are such events, etc.
Is StudCon all about management and work?? Is it all about brand building, student life related strategic planning and managing the student life on campus? Hang on. StudCon also revitalises the essence of fun on campus. The importance of fun and parties in the midst of the hectic schedules cannot be explained in words. StudCon ensures that there are frequent such informal interactions and gatherings where students can shred the stress of the academic pressure on campus. These parties go a long way to improve the camaraderie among the student community. After all, there’s no dearth to what can be achieved with students.
Students’ Council works with the sole ambition of improving the life for students at IIM K.
Their motto perfectly symbolises their functioning and objective: For K...today...forever
