IIMK Summit on - A Nation Online Print

AIMS 2007, the Annual IT Management Summit of IIM Kozhikode focused on the pervasiveness of the internet and its effect on our everyday lives. The summit held on 17th and 18th Nov at the scenic IIMK campus had "The New Frontiers of Technology: Consumer Internet, Wireless and Mobile" as its theme. AIMS 2007, India's largest student-driven IT summit, successfully brought together the IT industry, government officials and students for two days of intense discussions and brainstorming.  

aims_iimklive.jpg Going beyond a traditional summit, AIMS 2007 in association with Calicut IT Initiative (CITI, a professional citizens' initiative) launched ConnectCalicut, a round table discussion where decision-makers from major IT companies, the Kerala Government (including the IT and Industry secretaries of Kerala, and the District Collector of Calicut) and infrastructure developers including the Aditya Birla Group, converged. The round table discussions at ConnectCalicut served as a means of highlighting Calicut's advantages as a potential IT destination and brought out a number of invaluable suggestions and ideas from the IT heads based on their own experiences. The govt. officials and members of CITI actively sought feedback from IT leaders on requirements of IT organizations in order to help Calicut bridge the gap in order to become the next IT destinationThe Speakers at AIMS 2007 were from a mixture of start-ups and global giants. The speeches started with the keynote address by Mr. Murugavel Janakiraman, Founder and CEO, BharatMatrimony.com and Chairman, IAMAI, who spoke about the Indian online industry in general and about his brainchild, Bharatmatrimony.com in particular. He also spoke about the growth potential of the industry and possible future challenges in the same. Mr. Ananth Krishnan, VP and CTO of TCS, delivered an enlightening talk on ‘Consumer internet, wireless and mobility implications for the enterprise' and discussed the opportunities that pervasive mobility presents and the factors that hinder it from becoming a reality. Mr. Romal Shetty who heads KPMG's Telecom division addressed the audience on the telecom industry in India. He spoke on how the industry in India thrives purely on huge numbers and hence can afford to offer services at a lower rate to its customers. He predicted that one can expect more billion dollar companies to emerge from India in the near future. Mr. Sanjai K., Director, ERP, SAP Labs, conducted an enlightening workshop on careers in ERP. Mr. Pashupathy Gopalan, Vice President, Cypress Semiconductors, who conducted a workshop on Strategic Marketing spoke about how the semiconductor industry is the key driver of innovation in the electronics industry and the importance of and difficulty in predicting future trends in an industry as dynamic as this. Mr. Sandeep Shrivastav, Director of Search at Yahoo! India, speaking about the challenges and emerging trends of transactional and non-transactional online services, highlighted the importance of understanding the users' behavior, intent, location and profile in an increasingly dynamic environment. Mr. Lil Mohan the MD of the WiMax Divison at Intel delivered an inspring talk talk encouraging entrepreneurship and learnings form his own experiences as an entrepreneur in the Silicon Valley.  Mr. Alok Mittal, Executive Director, Canaan Partners interacted with the students on the topic of innovation. He also spoke about issues concerning talent management and entrepreneurship. Apart from this, BrainStorm, a panel discussion on "A Nation Online: How the internet is changing our everyday lives," featured the CEO of Bharat Matrimony, Mr. Murugavel Janakiraman, the Co-Promoter and COO of Naukri.com, Mr. Hitesh Oberoi and the MD of the WiMax Division at Intel, Mr. Lil Mohan. The discussion was moderated by star blogger and Founder-Director of f5ive Technologies, Mr. Kiruba Shankar.
