In a win that can only be termed legendary, Shamanth M and Chinmay Mishra, the quiz team from IIM Kozhikode blew their opponents to smithereens to win the recently concluded South Zone finals of Business Today - Acumen 2007 held at IIM Bangalore. The Business Today - Aditya Birla Group Acumen 2007 is one of the biggest B-school events in the country where the most prestigious business schools fight it out in a battle of eloquence, brilliance and reason. The event consists of four regional rounds of Quizzes and Debates culminating in the National finals. This year's edition had popular cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle playing host, bringing in his characteristic charm and wit. It was an awe-inspiring performance by IIMK. When the dust finally settled, the final score read IIM Kozhikode - 230; IIM Bangalore - 60; TAPMI -30 and BIM - 20. The sheer enormity of the win forced the effervescent Harsha Bhogle to comment: "IIMK has created history... I have not seen such a convincing and comprehensive victory in years!" In another exchange that brought the audience to cheers, Harsha Bhogle responded to an answer by the IIM Kozhikode team saying "I cannot give that to you, this is not what I'm looking for.." only to be countered by "But the answer is right!". By what is indicative of the prodigious talent IIM Kozhikode had on display, Harsha shot back "Millionaires don't worry about Pennies!" The news of the landslide win brought much cheer and joy to students on campus, particularly to the members of IIM K's in-house quizzing club Atharva.
Atharva is one of the most active quizzing clubs across campuses conducting quizzes on a weekly basis for the students. The quizzes have a unique flavour to them in that every quiz is centered on a unique theme ranging from pop culture to entertainment to sports. The weekly rendezvous elicits enthusiastic participation and is hugely popular among the many avid quizzers on campus. The above said, the team from IIMK was expected to do well at the event. And how!!!IIM Kozhikode's debate team also turned in a hugely commendable performance narrowly missing out in the semi-finals. The debate team had finished third in last year's edition and second in the National Finals the year before. The stellar performance of the incumbent students was complemented by Arun Kumar Pradhan, an IIM K alumnus whose team finished first as part of the North Zone alumni round this year. Now it's time for Shamanth and Chinmay - the quiz whizzes - to take on the zonal Champions in the National Finals to be held on December 15 at Mumbai. Will they sweep the stakes again? We'll wait and watch.
